Step 2 – Man’s Problem
We have a problem we can’t fix on our own.
Romans 3:23 “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
What is humanity’s problem?
What is sin?
What is the result of sin?
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death BUT the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Wages are what we earn by our actions. What do we earn by our sin?
Our sin separates us from God for eternity unless somehow we are released from paying the price for it.
Hebrews 9:27 “As it is appointed unto man once to die and after that the judgment.”
What happens after we die?
What are some ways that we try to get to God’s side?
Going to church, praying, helping people, giving money, doing good deeds.
What does the Bible say about our attempts to reach Him?
Ephesians 2:8,9 “For by grace are we saved through faith, and that not of ourselves it is a gift of God. Not by works, lest any man should boast.”
Can our best efforts bridge the separation between us and God?
All Have Sinned
Isaiah 53:6
“All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.”
Isaiah 59:2
“But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.”
Romans 3:23
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Ecclesiastes 7:20
“Indeed, there is not a righteous man on earth who continually does good and who never sins.”
1 John 1:8
“If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.”
1 John 1:10
“If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.”
Psalm 14:1-3
The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds;
There is no one who does good.
2 The Lord has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men
To see if there are any who understand,
Who seek after God.
3 They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt;
There is no one who does good, not even one.
We are saved by Grace not Works
Isaiah 64:6
“For all of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like filthy rags.”
Titus 3:5
“He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness but acording to His mercy,, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
Galatians 2:16
“Nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; since by the works of the law no flesh will be justified.”
Romans 11:6
“But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.”
Colossians 2:13,14
“When you were dead in your sins, He made you alive together with Jesus, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way having nailed it to the cross.”
God will Judge
Isaiah 33:22
“For the Lord is our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver.”
Hebrews 4:13
“And no creature is hidden from His sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we much give account.”
Romans 1“Nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; since by the works of the law no flesh will be justified.”
The Wrath of God
1 Thessalonians 1:,9.10
“You turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come.”
Romans 1:18
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.”
Romans 2:5
“But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself ikn the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who will render to each person according to his deeds.”
1 Thessalonians 5:9,10
“For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that we will live together with Him.”
Romans 5:8-10
“For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners; Christ died for us. Much more the, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.” “For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that we will live together with Him.”
Hebrews 10:31
“It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
Matthew 10:28
“Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
John 5:24
“Truly, Truly I say to you, he who hears my words and believes on Him who sent Me has eternal life and does not come into judgment but has passed from death unto life.”
Ephesians 2:3
“Among them we too all formerly lied in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath.”
Revelation 6:17
“And they said to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the presence of Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to stand?”
Matthew 7:13,14
“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”
