The Bible says that the Life is in the Blood (Leviticus 17:14). ” The issues of life are the blood. Our body is only alive because blood is going through it. Anywhere in the body you want more healing you must bring more blood because blood carries the red blood cells which has the oxygen, nutrition and water and takes away waste and the white flood cells.” Dr. Barbara O’Neill
We must keep our heart pump strong (it is a muscle) and our blood thin. Hawthorn is an incredible gift for heart health. You can make jams, wines, teas, tinctures, vinegars, elixirs with the haws for a tasty unparalleled heart tonic.
When I first foraged for Hawthorns I heard of a Hawthorn grove on the top of Snake Mountain. Each Spring, climbing up to this magical foraging haven, I gathered Hawthorn’s early tasty leaves, returning in a month or so for their five petaled fragrant flowers and looking forward to the first frost to gather an abundance of Haws. All of this I would put in a mason jar with brandy to infuse, adding each gift as it presented itself…even the thorns! This became the most treasured healing elixir in my herbal apothecary.
Since those early years exploring Snake mountain I have found nearby ‘grocery stores’ that stock Hawthorns and gather them in all the seasons for a year round supply of Hawthorn’s amazing goodness for prevention and cure.
